Overview of the Sumba: Sumba is a fairly large but remote island situated between Sumbawa and Rote, a dry landscape with an interesting culture. Sumba is like the wild west of Indonesia, dry, raw and wild, this is a place where men still carry machetes and ride wild horses.

Waves: Like on land the waves of Sumba are often raw and rugged, most of the coastline picks up a lot of swell and if it's big it's often big everywhere, not many roads lead to surf spots meaning perhaps the best way to surf here is via boat.

Crowd wise: Being such a rugged place with most of the coastline hard to access and not much accommodation, crowds in Sumba are normally low, however areas such as miller's right and Watu Libung can get crowded.

Sumba surf spots: Description and video's

These are only the most well known waves.

Nihiwatu/Occys left/gods left- The wave that put Sumba on the map after occy appears surfing it in an old billabong video, "Green Iguana" its a left of high quality a fast barrel that wraps around a reef, with quality highly dependent on tide and winds, word is you can only surf the wave if you stay at the resort, we can't confirm if this is true or not as the resort's web site doesn't state this (will check it out and update)

Millers right- One of the most popular waves on the island, a long right reef/point, its not your typical indo sucking straight bottom barrel, its more a tight almond barrel with fatter sections, or other days a fat wave with hollower sections, think an indo style bells beach, this is perhaps one of the few waves in Sumba that can get crowded.

Other waves- Various lefts and right reefs, river mouths, and beachie's most packing power and punch.
