Overview of Simeulue Island: Located
in the Aceh province of North Sumatra, Simeulue island is
fairly large remote island
with about half a dozen smaller islands.
The Waves: Unlike
the Mentawai's, Nias, and Banyaks, Simeulue doesn't have any
noted world class waves,
it does however have surf of varying quality and consistency,
mostly fun hollow reefs and average beachie's, not the best
waves in
Indonesia,
but what it lacks in quality it makes up for in lack of crowds,
in
2004
Simeulue
was
also effected by the Aceh Tsunami and Earthquake, sadly in
some areas this affected reefs raising them some height, even
completely destroying surf spots, most of the waves are located
in the south end of the island.
Crowd
wise: Generally crowds in the past have been
low, occasionally charter boats do visit the southern area,
but
only in small numbers as there focus is the higher quality
waves of the Banyaks, however recently a new camp has opened
and another will open in 2012, so expect this situation to
change somewhat at least in the southern peak/jackals area.
Dylan's: Perhaps the most well
known and one of the better quality waves in the area a hollow
right point/reef of medium length, not the most perfect wave
by Indonesian
standards
but
still offers a good chance to get barreled.
Tea bags/Tupah: Breaking on a small offshore
island a hollow powerful right, suitable to only good surfers
gets very heavy as it gets bigger, holds solid waves.
Thailand: A left, the wave is named after
a thai saw mill that once stood near the wave.
Jackals/the Peak- Left and right reef peak,
site of a new surf camp.
Other waves- variety of other left and right
reefs and beaches of varying quality, many rarely surfed and
like areas like the telo's
each charter boat/camp have different names for each spot.
