Overview of the Java: Java is a large island
and is home to most of Indonesian's population, it is also
a very old culture and areas such as central java and its temples
of Borobudur and Prambanan are major indonesian tourist destinations,
for any surfer interested in Indonesia a visit to this area
is a must once in your life, perhaps not for the waves but
at least for the historic and cultural tourism aspect.
The Waves: The coastline is rather straight
and open to the full brunt of swell, with mostly poor quality
beach breaks facing direct into the SE trade wind.
Two areas however are sometimes visited by surfers the tourist
area of Pangandaran which has a slow sand bottom right point
perfectly
suited to mals and also in the area that indoecosurf
operate,
a very rugged coastline, with the odd reef ledge, beachie and
river mouth.
Generally the quality of waves is low and rather fickle, however
if a trip to this area is looked at more from a tourist point
of view, taking in the many natural and historical sites then
the area is well worth visiting.
Crowd wise: Crowds are generally low to empty,
with a low standard of surfing in most areas apart from at
the bay where indoecosurf are based, where a good surfing ability
is needed unless small.
Java surf
spots: Description
and video's
There are two main areas.
Batu karus- A very mellow slow peeling sand
bottom point break that never seems to get very big, perfect
for beginners and malibu riders, waves can be quite long, but
often lack power shape and size.
Other waves round batu karus- there are a
few other waves an inside mellow reef, beach breaks and another
average
left reef, all suited to malibu riders, young kids or beginners.
The other area is where Indoecosurf operate.
Heavy left- featured in many magazines of
late and with a surf camp operating there, when smaller surfers
of average ability and above can surf this wave, however once
head high and bigger, the wave is very heavy and hollow looking
at times like
a cross between Padang Padang and Teahupoo.
Heavy right- On the other side of this beautiful
bay is a right, shorter than the left, this wave is also really
only suited to better surfers with a short hollow barrel before
ending in the rip that separate's the two breaks.
Other waves- This coast also has a few other
odd reefs, ledges, beachies, generally of average quality and
of
a very
fickle
nature, with conditions more often than not to big, or to windy
with all breaks quality or surfabilty being highly dependent
on
tides.
#Note this area has been up until the last
few years been unknown to most however the heavy left has
been featured in
almost every surfing magazine around the
world, perhaps due more to
its great photographic wave and background, rather than anything
else, there is also a surf camp located there as we have
mentioned, so it could hardly
be called
a secret.
(not
that we have told you where it is anyway, other than its
on the Java coast)
