Overview of the Hinako's: The Hinako Islands
are a small group of 8 small islands located off the coast
of Nias island
The Waves:There is two waves of focus in
the Hinko's (see descriptions below) both pick up a fair amount
of swell and often get and hold some very solid waves, they
are also offshore in opposite wind directions, sadly the
Nias quake of
2004
also affected
both of these
waves
in
a negative
way raising the reefs up to 4ft and although both waves still
break and are still great waves, they do lack the quality that
they once did.
Crowd
wise: Crowd numbers really depend on the number
of guest staying in the camps and how many boats are passing
through, although it can get crowded if camps are full as
there is really only two waves in the area that work in opposite
winds.
Hinako islands surf
spots: Description
and video's
Asu- A long wrapping quality left hander,
with a variety of walls and barrel sections, the wave once
had a very hollow
inside
section
called the nuke zone, however this section now is generally
dry reef.(Vid is post quake, notice exposed reef at start)
Bawa- Made famous in the 90's when Tom curren
rode a fish out there in very solid waves, playing with the
waves
like
it was a quarter the size. bawa is a deep water right that
picks up a lot of swell and holds some of the biggest waves
in Indonesia, the "Sunset" of Indo, sadly like Asu
the quality of the wave was affected by the Nias quake and
the inside section
dubbed the fish bowl is said to be no more.(vid is from before
quake, sorry no decent vid of post quake on you tube)
Other waves- There is said to be 3 more rights
and 2 lefts, of varying quality that a rarely surfed.
